Everything You Need To Know About Tony Gwynn
Tony Gwynn is one of the best known baseball players in American history. San Diego residents know him as “Mr. Padre,” and he is one of the few athletes who has stayed with the same team for an entire career. Formally known as Anthony Keith Gwynn, Sr., this baseball legend played with the San Diego Padres for 20 straight seasons after making his debut with the team in 1982.
Born in Los Angeles, Tony knew he wanted to stay in southern California when he started his professional sports career. While his baseball skills are indisputable, Tony was also a great basketball player. He was drafted to the Padres at around the same time the San Diego Clippers basketball team selected him. However, Tony decided to stick with baseball because of the lack of fights compared with the other sport. This proved to be a wise choice, as the future baseball All-Star ended up having quite a fruitful career.
Tony has had the career of a lifetime. He officially retired from Major League Baseball in 2001 with a total of 135 home runs to his name. Tony also won the All-Star title 15 times throughout those two decades. His son, Tony Gywnn, Jr. has followed his father’s footsteps and is a current MLB player.
